Play Area, Outdoor Gym & Tennis:
The Watchet Memorial Ground is a large playing field with children’s play park, tennis courts, outdoor gym, cricket ground and other sports facilities. It sits adjacent to the West Somerset Rail tracks, and benefits from fabulous views out over the channel, punctuated by puffs of smoke and the comforting and nostalgic sound of the heritage steam train whistles.
The play equipment is in a large, fenced off section of the park where dogs aren’t allowed to go. It has all the typical playground facilities, as well as an outdoor gym, which is accessible at any time of day or night.
There are two tennis courts at the Doniford Road end of the ground, behind the play park. They are open at all times and there is no booking system – simply turn up and play! You can drive up to the courts by taking the narrow turning on Doniford Road, immediately after Goviers Lane if driving out of town towards Doniford.
Did you know?
Originally owned by the Wyndham Estate, the Memorial Ground is a war memorial, established in 1922 to honour the men of Watchet who went to fight in WW1, and was provided for the benefit of all the people in the town. Watchet Town Council is the current Trustee, although the site is administered by Watchet War Memorial Management Committee, which is made up of various local groups who use the site as well as members of the public.
